Blurbs from the Judges!
Orla’s Nightmare by AntonM
@Dannygoodshirt - The shift from Black and White to the colorful dream was a cool idea. Even though the dream sequence was great, the scene with the human was drawn so well I found myself wanting more of it. Great work & congrats!
@Aalasteir - Stunning. There's abundant grace in how visually focused the storytelling is, with its emphasis on movement that really helps the viewer connect with the nightmare's emotion.
@KittyhawkMontrose - 🟩 Creepy, creepy! I loved the atmosphere of this one. And yet there’s some good humor. The art is raw, and I think it fits the story well. The colors are so good in the middle.
🟥 The art is a bit hard to read at first, but once you get in, it’s all good.
@Luis - Good mood setting and great use of dark tones. Good use of mixed media. Some pages felt a little dry and too panel heavy.
@Mattyburrito - Loved how it went from a bleak black and white film to vibrant but also terrifyingly lush and grotesque visuals within the dream. My favorite shot is of
the eyes with the red tone. The visuals and panel pacing were very reminiscent of old Frank Miller comics. A very mesmerizing piece I could see being part of
a horror anthology.
@Rannitx - The black and white panels are super well done, such a great balance of tones while keeping it readable. The nightmare looks great. Really awesome to see a mixed media entry. I would love to have seen more of the human and worm interactions.
@NoMoreChie - Anton just doesn't miss.
@VoicesByCorey - I truly enjoyed your use of colored pencils and watercolors! Gives a unique feel and stands out! Design of the bug were cool and the story was intriguing.
Sprint by Slimygoo
@Dannygoodshirt - One of the most consistent and well-done entries in the Jump Contest. The composition and art were all strong. The story was clear, but I thought the lil’ guys were difficult to emotionally invest in, but at least their bulge made me laugh. Congrats!
@Aalasteir - Using varied panel layouts was a very good decision, as it helps a lot with the story’s pacing. The aftermath of the bridge explosion was very well communicated. The POV shots are great.
@KittyhawkMontrose - 🟩 The art well executed here, and the panels also well done. The story is very simple and easy to follow. The motivations of the characters are clear.
🟥 The story is a whiplash of serious and wacky. It’s a bit too simple as well. Also, warning: well-rendered gobbo crotch.
@Luis - Fun concept and great character designs. Probably the most 'pro' looking comic book.
@Mattyburrito - This one surprised me the most - I didn't think a track race between a bunch of Jak and Daxter rodent humanoids would get me so invested. Big ups for being able to establish the characters, motivations, and stakes in such a short amount of time. Movement is so fluidly conveyed with the poses, really striking stuff.
@Rannitx - The line work on this is crazy good. The style is consistent and there are tons of poses with different angles. Nothing felt stiff in this. Really great work 100%.
@NoMoreChie - great sense of speed and weight through the interactions from the characters, pretty tense with a heartfelt ending to boot.
@VoicesByCorey - The only submission I gave a perfect score to. Loved everything about it, the story, the art, the pacing. You captured every detail that made this comic standout. Solid work, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Brutalist Brick: Film Buffs by houzatosis
@Dannygoodshirt - Some of the strongest compositions and paneling. The color palette and characters are so lively, it was just a fun time to read. I think you could have done a little more story-wise, but either way I enjoyed reading it. Congrats!
@Aalasteir - Fantastic use of negative space and very creative paneling.
@KittyhawkMontrose - 🟩The style is really cool, and composition and color are top notch. I like the use of tones to create texture. The story is simple but relatable.
🟥 There’s too much dialog and not much happens. I can relate to the story, but I feel weird that I’m supposed to feel something for someone feeling something about a movie without me seeing that movie. There’s just not enough here for that. Like if this was longer and I knew the characters better, it would be better.
@Luis - Fun characters, and layouts. Some of the pages felt a bit too busy and the speech bubbles strung together makes it a little hard to read and keep up with whats going on.
@Mattyburrito - Phenomenal palette, linework, and panel layout. Reading felt like catching a late night broadcast of an obscure adult cartoon (like Mission Hill.)
Major props for being able to make characters watching movies together visually entertaining and dynamic.
@Rannitx - I love the limited color selection here. Strong, confident designs, easy to follow panels. Deserves to be in the top 3. Love that she gets into the Shin Khaemelea movie.
@NoreMoreChie - Feels like an early 2000s show similar to the critic or Mtv downtown. the chill movie night vibe with unique dialogue matched with stunning composition framed through film reels makes this one favorite read out of the bunch.
@VoicesByCorey - I truly enjoyed your color scheme. Different shades incorporated a tone for the comic. Nothing like finding good cinema when you least expect it also.
Don’t overthink it. by CourtCrow
@Dannygoodshirt - This was a personal favorite. As a fan of Welcome to the NHK, and Osamu Dazai, I’ve got a soft spot for hyper-manic lead characters. The shading was great, the characters were super expressive, and the layouts were nicely done. Some of the text could have been more readable, and the ending could have been clearer, but keep up the great work!
@Aalasteir - The compositions presented in the story are fantastic.
@KittyhawkMontrose - 🟩 Art is top notch. The way the panels flow is so good. It’s well paced. The colors are amazing. Characters are well designed.
🟥 I didn’t connect with the message or the way the story ended, but I can tell the author is passionate about this topic.
@Luis - Nice color palette, fun characters, ending is kind of fizzles, and the typography felt a little too dainty (pink w/ white type)
@Mattyburrito - I definitely did and am continuing to overthink it. I kept going back and trying to re-analyze panels to check if there were any details I missed in regards to the ending. Fantastic expression work, great lighting and color work.
@Rannitx - Sick shading and highlights, Funny story got a real laugh out of me. Awesome job! Love how the “It’s not that deep bro.” destroys the MC. Feel like we have all been there lol.
@NoMoreChie - Keeps it comical without preaching about said topic. Great art, color, and panel work to convey the emotions of the characters.
@VoicesbyCorey - Nice take on the concept of finding the deeper meaning of content. Sometimes we get too wrapped up in it lol! Loved your artwork, kinda reminded me of Nox's world a bit.
Rage Room by wwiredweird
@Dannygoodshirt - Excellent expressive characters and strong color palette. The comic is chaotic but very readable, which is difficult to pull off.
@Aalasteir - Visually distinct. Fiery and ferocious in presentation with seamless flow. The handwritten text complements the design very well.
@KittyhawkMontrose - 🟩 Amazing color and style. It’s like each page is a poster. The composition is very good. Very action packed.
🟥 It’s hard to tell what is going on most of the time. It’s very floaty in having scant backgrounds and style over readability.
@Luis - Interesting characters, compositions and color palettes. Feels complete and easy to follow.
@Mattyburrito - Pulse-pounding and hyperactive style from start to finish. Very eye catching visuals in this, I like how it throws you right into the chaos. The gritty action
and cartoony art style are captivating but it is a bit hard to read and understand what's going on up front.
@Rannitx - Colors in this are chef’s kiss, Some really strong panels, page one is powerful. The action poses are strong as fuck. Great job!
@NoMoreChie - I'll be lying if I said I knew what the hell was going on in this comic but the character designs, composition and colors really make this comic pop out with a style of its own. Would love to see more of Rage room but perhaps a little slowed down to allow the comic to breathe.
@VoicesByCorey - I think what captured my attention the most was your composition. Good transitions and I enjoyed the story. Unique use of color schemes as well!
Love Catastrophe by shyesundae
@Dannygoodshirt - I love the colors and clean linework. The character designs and interactions felt very cute and natural. I do recommend using text boxes for better readability.
@Aalasteir - A charming comic with strong characterization, expressive art, and vibrant colors, including fun NG references and detailed backgrounds.
@KittyhawkMontrose - 🟩 The art is super cute! I love when the cats go real too. The composition is well done, and I like the choice of fonts. The story is simple and cute. Very fluffy!
🟥 I wish there were balloons to make the text easier to read, but I see it was done to keep the panels tight. The story is predictable, but like I said, this is fluff. Nothing wrong with that!
@Luis - Fun style and colors, characters are likeable and have good personality. I thought some of the layouts were not as tight as some of the other comics out there.
@Mattyburrito - Adorable scenario and fun take on the "transformed into a creature" scenario - big Bee and Puppycat vibes. Really clean layout work with a bright color palette that doesn't overwhelm the reader.
@Rannitx - Colors are on point, lines are clean, and the characters look great. I also like how on the title page her shadow is a cat. Fun little RomCom.
@NoMoreChie - Cute premise you would see from an cartoon network show with good art to go with it. though it feels like the panels are way too close to the characters with semi flat backgrounds, the light magical cat adventure charm shines through.
@VoicesByCorey - Cute little story about finding the nerves to admit feelings to your crush! Loved your artwork, the story and the composition that enhanced the pace of it.
Drawn in by manecofigo
@Dannygoodshirt - Cool concept. Cool art. I dig the Junji Ito vibe. I look forward to more of the anthology! Maybe the theme could have been stronger and to many panels spent on a single action.
@Aalasteir - Great art and last panel was creative.
🟩 Art is top notch, and the atmosphere and pacing is perfect. I don’t want to spoil any of it. Amazing work.
🟥 Maybe it could’ve been longer to create more tension, but considering there was a page limit, this is good.
@Luis - Fun concept, great mood in the art, and the final panel is a great way to end it. Wondering if some minimal color might have helped it some.
@Mattyburrito - This gave me the same unnerving sensation as the horror manwha's friends used to link us to in our group chats back in college. The pacing felt reminiscent of Gantz. The shading and lighting of scenes also effectively adds to the mood. Also dig the monster design - sort of reminds me of a Heavens Smile from Killer7.
@Rannitx - The monster is awesome. Love the fourth wall break at the end. Hope non of the readers have trypophobia! Big Junji Ito vibes which is a good thing. Hope you two work together again on your anthology.
@NoMoreChie - the creepy tone and feel this comic holds throughout is awesome, shading is on point.
@VoicesByCorey - Has this undertone that's creepy and I liked it! Story felt unique to me and your illustrations were well drawn!
Dead Silence by Guileness
@Dannygoodshirt - The fact you told a coherent story with very little dialogue is generally impressive. I do wish the dialogue was written more clearly. Maybe the use of boxes could help.
@Aalasteir - Gorgeous emphasis on darkness. The panels flow smoothly and fluently, making it a great joy to follow the story along with fantastic rich coloring!
@KittyhawkMontrose - 🟩 Well paced, great horror leading up to the reveal, which is great. The art and composition are well executed. I like the use of color.
🟥 The kills could’ve been longer and more graphic, but that’s my only complaint.
@Luis - Fun typography and layouts. I think some pages come off a bit chaotic and disorganized.
@Mattyburrito - The artstyle gave me a classic, early-2000's Newgrounds kind of nostalgia. While I am unsure if this was the intent or not,
I really enjoyed the tongue and cheek sort of edgy tone to the macabre and spooky narrative.
@Rannitx - Great colors and good contrast. I really like how the magical green fire casts a glow in the environment. Some of the poses are a bit stiff but I hope you do another entry next time. Awesome job!
@NoMoreChie - Love the sketchy early 2000s feel and look of this comic, the colors and rim lighting makes it a joy to look at but the overall comic ain't for me.
@VoicesByCorey - Dark tones really stood out in this comic, especially in your illustrations. The art was interesting for sure, but kinda felt lost in the story telling. Did enjoy it though!
Arctic Comission by Mardode
@Dannygoodshirt - Clean artwork, great composition, and natural feeling characters. The story went on a bit long, and the quality dipped toward the end, but I really liked the varied text and composition you pulled off.
@Aalastier - Wonderfully adventurous while bring great dynamism to the action. The vehicles scenes are drawn exceptionally well.
@KittyhawkMontrose - 🟩 The world building is great, and I like the characters. Props for all the shots of the snowmobiles. It’s a great misadventure!
🟥 Composition could be better on some pages, but that’s all I can think of.
@Luis - Sharp artwork, gives a good sense of the weather affecting the characters, expresses temperature with line and no color. Thought the end kind of fizzles out.
@Mattyburrito - I enjoyed the very blue collar approach and tone to the characters, you really do feel like you're on the job with them. This comic had a very pulpy kind of aura about it and it's probably just me - but MC gave me early 2000s Sega Dreamcast Protagonist vibes - and that's a plus in my book. (edited)
@Rannitx - Clean artwork, expressive characters. Props for using Krita! Feel like there is a good balance of tones at the beginning but it does seem to be less shaded at page 11 onward. But with deadlines that is completely understandable. Keep up the great work.
@NoMoreChie - Good use of setting to create a fun heist chase, the vehicle and characters were very well drawn with awesome expressions and pretty good sense of flow throughout the comic.
@VoicesByCorey - Simple black and white feeds this mysterious arctic land. Enjoyed your storytelling in this. Art felt simplistic at times, but it worked in my opinion!
Roundabout Rodeo by Atak0medive Zizistressa and Cowtomboy
@Dannygoodshirt - I love the art style and overall character designs were very expressive. The story was fun, but didn’t need to be that long. When it comes to dialogue, less is more.
@Aalasteir - Cool world-building and halftones add a lot to the atmosphere. The dynamic perspective shots enhance the storytelling.
@KittyhawkMontrosek - 🟩 Starts out strong and hard. The characters are super well designed, and world seems really cool. I could see myself reading this as a comic series! Also, Country Road mentioned. That’s always a plus.
🟥 After some good action, it got way too talky. I don’t know if that was the right way to end it, but like I said, I’d be up for more.
@Luis - Fun character designs and panels. Seemed a bit too wordy for my taste. Ending could have been more satisfying.
@Mattyburrito - A fun western saloon romp with a sort of post-apocalyptic aesthetic, rousing a similar tone to old Jouji Manabe doujins and Heavy Metal Magazine. I also dig the sort of Toriyama-esque irreverence and overall goofy nature of the characters, it's very charming. The pacing wavered a bit, but overall enjoyable.
@Rannitx - Cool world building in a way reminds me of Cowboy Bebop with the tech. Funny characters, wasn’t ready for an epic rap battle. Some of the panels are less consistent but again understandable with deadlines. Good job, keep it up!
@NoMoreChie - Fun cast of characters with charming looking art and perspective work, does fall off a bit near the end but still very enjoyable.
@VoicesByCorey - Unique characters, classic comic/manga feel to it, truly enjoyed everything about this! The story was pretty interesting as well!
